Cancer Research Relay for Life in Bolton
Sarah Dawson is the volunteer for Cancer Research
Relay for Life is an inspirational community led event designed to celebrate the lives of people touched by cancer and raise money for the vital work of Cancer Research
Sarah is the Chair of the Bolton Relay for Life Committee and is looking for other volunteers to join this Committee. The Committee will work as a team, responsible for organising all aspects of the event
So what is Relay for Life??
The Relay is a non-athletic event. Members of teams take turns to walk around a track for 24 hours, showing how cancer never sleeps.
There is a carnival atmosphere all day with a wide variety of activities taking place, including dancing, games and musical performances. At some Relays there is also a chance to meet Cancer Research
Candle of Hope Ceremony
As the evening draws in everyone gathers to light Candles of Hope to pay tribute to those whose lives have been directly affected by cancer.
Bags are filled with sand and a glowing candle to light up messages of celebration and remembrance, which burn throughout the night.
Survivors Lap of Honor
As Relay for Life's Guests of Honor, Cancer Survivors of all ages start the Relay by walking the first lap. They are cheered on by family, friends and teams from the community who have come together to celebrate their achievements and help more people beat cancer.
The role of Volunteers
There are many different opportunities for volunteers to get involved within Relay for Life, depending on how much time they can commit as a volunteer.
The Committee
Volunteers are needed to form a committee which will be responsible for organising all aspects of the Relay. Being part of the committee is an excellent opportunity for volunteers to make this a unique and special event. Committee members will be given the chance to put their own ideas into action!
Committee members have the opportunity to take on a specific role and make it their own or to have a more general role helping out with various tasks where needed. The different committee roles can be found attached.
The chair of the committee will be with them every step of the way to offer support and guidance and will act as a mentor to all committee members. The committee will have a strong sense of team spirit helping each other out with all aspects of organising.
