Jim Crowe

Qualifications and Experience

Born in, and attended school, in Liverpool. Qualified as a teacher of Physical Education at Loughborough College and then taught in Merseyside for 9 years.

Moved to Cumbria in 1975 to work at Carlisle Sports Centre, eventually becoming Manager. Jim managed the ‘SportsLink’ Scheme in Carlisle from 1990-1993. The aim of the scheme was to encourage young people to take up sport out of school and create links between schools and the local sports clubs.

Currently working as Sport & Recreation Manager for Allerdale Borough Council in West Cumbria. Projects include the Community Sports Coach Scheme; linking with the school sport co-ordinator programme and the specialist sports college; cycling for health project sports development programmes in leisure facilities and working closely with local sports clubs and community groups to improve the opportunities for people to take part in sport to create a healthier and safer community.

Joined Carlisle Sports Council Executive in 1975 and has been involved with organising events, courses and seminars for volunteers in local clubs. During his time on Council Jim has been Chair in two periods, 1983 to 1990 and 1993 to 2001 and is currently Vice Chair. Major events have included an annual School of Sport for talented young sports people which ran for 16 years. Jim was also a member of the organising group which ran a week of sport for disabled people for 8 years. Jim received the Sport England Northern Region ‘Service To Sport Award’ in 1996 for his voluntary work for sport in Carlisle.

His main sport interest has been Trampolining, Jim has coached at Carlisle Trampoline Club since 1975 and has been a member of the Regional Committee since 1977. He became Secretary in 1979 and has continued with this Honorary role since that time. He was a Director of the British Trampoline Federation for 4 years, until the merger of the sport into a discipline in British Gymnastics was completed. Jim received the ‘Award of Merit’ from British Gymnastics in 2002 for services to the sport of Trampolining. In June 2006 he was awarded ‘Life Membership’ of the North of England Gymnastics Association.

Jim has been a member of the Cumbria Playing Fields Association from 1978 to the present.

He was an Executive Member of Northern Sports Association (for disabled people) from 1980-1991. Officiated at Indoor and Outdoor Regional Games and organised the Cumbria Indoor Games.

He was a member of the North West Federation for Sport & Physical Recreation from 1999 to 2002.

Jim worked as a volunteer at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002, based at the G-MEX Centre for the Gymnastics events.
