Why I became a Board member

From a very early stage in my participation in sport I realised the value of the contribution that volunteers in sport make to the running of all types of activities, whether they be leagues, tournaments, coaching clinics and squads for talented young sport people. I remember my teachers organising and refereeing our Football matches and volunteers at my local boys’ club organising a range of sports events.

I recognised the vast amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to make sure the successful administration and officiating of sport ensures that regular matches and competitions take place.

The structure of sport in this country relies heavily on volunteers making that vital contribution to the coaching, organising, officiating and administration of so many sporting events. I feel it is important that people who have been able to take advantage of the support of volunteers should try to put something back into sport and help others. In particularly young people need that support whilst they are learning new skills and developing as people.

It would be very difficult to put a price on the amount of work that volunteers do, it would certainly make sport too expensive for the majority of young people if full costs had to be paid.

Working as a volunteer also helps to improve the skills and knowledge of the individual, giving each one a positive role to play and helping to improve your own healthy life as well as helping others.

I would like to use the knowledge and experience I have gained in sport to help improve the number of volunteers and their knowledge so that the administration and organisation of sports activities is developed to enable young people lead an active, healthy and enjoyable life.

I hope the SVNW will contribute to the development of a vast network of volunteers who will be able to acquire new skills and knowledge to pass on to encourage new young people to take part in sport.
