Why I am a Board Member

My passion for Volunteering has been fuelled since launching the ‘Get Active, Get Volunteering’ Scheme in January 2007. The scheme recruited 100 volunteers in it’s first year and I was able to see the benefits both to the Volunteers themselves and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust.  My interest created opportunities such as leading the Volunteer Programme for the Trust’s Cultural Olympiad Programme and a place on the North West Volunteering Steering group for the 2012 Games, as well as the opportunity to become a Board member.

The 2012 Olympic Games is certainly an inspiration to me personally and professionally and has opened up so many opportunities for Volunteers to learn new skills and become involved in their passion. I would like to see Sports Volunteering North West enable as many volunteers in the North West to be involved with the 2012 Olympic Games and the atmosphere of the games transfer to the North West.

I have been a Volunteer for a number of  years now and my main role was at Stockport County Ladies Football Club as Sports Masseuse and Physiotherapist, which I did for 3 years. I really enjoyed being a part of a team and seeing the results of my role and how grateful the girls were for my time.  I have also volunteered at Race for life events and as a runner myself raised money for Christies and Diabetes UK through completing 3 Great Manchester 10K Runs.

I am extremely excited about London 2012 and the fantastic opportunities for Volunteers it will create.  Wigan has two venues that are in the Training Camp Handbook and, as a Borough, Wigan is looking forward to experiencing the ‘spirit of olympism’ on our door step. We are encouraging people of all ages to become involved in volunteering now and build up their Volunteer CV if they aspire to be at the Olympic Games. It is certainly one of my ambitions.
