Katy Young "Making the Most out of University Sport Volunteering"

Katy Young – Liverpool  University Sports Administrator, BUSA Volunteer Strategy Developer

Following on from an MSc in Volunteer Management from RoehamptonUniversity, Katy went on to work as a Volunteer manager for the Metropolitan Police, establishing a borough volunteer programme.

 

Becoming interested in HE sports volunteering during time spent at LeicesterUniversity, Katy was Captain of the Boat club and subsequently sat upon the Athletic Union's executive committee. As part of her MSc studies, Katy undertook a placement at the British University Sports Association working to develop their volunteer strategy, representing the organisation with other sporting and voluntary bodies.

 

Now working as administrator at Sport Liverpool, Katy’s primary responsibility is to look after the sport clubs within the University of Liverpool.

 

Session: Making the Most out of University Volunteering

 

The session aims to give a brief outline of current understanding/environment of HE sports volunteering, including examples from other institutions and areas of sporting activity (i.e large events, schools etc).

 

Provide insight into motivations, support structures and how best to develop the potential for internal and external volunteering opportunities amongst students in HE.

 

Interactive discussions will take place on 5 specific areas of HE volunteering:

·         Student for student sport volunteering (i.e BUSA/internal leagues)

·         Student for events (i.e BUSA champs/Olympics)

·         Student for Community (i.e coaching schools/youth groups)

·         Student for academia (i.e volunteering for credits)

·         Community for community (i.e broader volunteering opportunities within HE such as staff volunteers)

 

The session will identify and share good practice and areas for both individual institutions and the NW area as a whole to develop.
