Hands Up for Sports Volunteering Conference 2009

The 2009 Sports Volunteering North West conference was held on Tuesday 28th April at Preston Grasshoppers Rugby Football Club.

Volunteer managers, coordinators and sports’ volunteers from across the North West region met to debate the role of volunteers in the current sporting landscape and how these dedicated people can be supported.

Delegates received, first hand, the latest thinking on sports volunteering from a national and regional context and had the opportunity to learn from others and get new ideas to help you on a daily basis - not forgetting the chance to meet up with new and existing colleagues and catch up with progress.

This dedicated conference provided key updates on areas within volunteering and high quality workshops.

Key notes - leading figures from across the region and beyond gave a real and wide perspective, including:

  • Maximising the impact of 2012: Phil De Glanville, Ex England RFU Captain & Head of Investment, Sport England
  • Which volunteers are worth it?: John Eady, Chief Executive, Knight, Kavanagh & Page
  • Learning from other voluntary sectors: Debbi Lander, Arts Council Northwest

There was also an interactive Q & A session with leading figures in sport including Jimmy Armfield.

Breakout sessions - a selection of the country's leading international sports professionals facilitated specific breakout sessions, teaching and delivering new skills and knowledge.

Topics included effectively recruiting and rewarding volunteers, 2012 related volunteering and CPD for volunteer managers.
