Lancashire youngster wins first ever England Squash “Young Volunteer Award”

Our first receiptant of the “Young Volunteer Award” for December 2006” is 15-year-old Matthew Turner, a pupil from Standish Community High School near Wigan.

Over the past 2 years England Squash have been formally recognising its volunteers by presenting volunteer of the month awards.  Awards come from Clubs, Counties, or England Squash Area Managers with nominations assessed by an England Squash Awards panel.  Winners are recognised on the England Squash Website and in the England “Squash Player” magazine.  All awards are presented at special presentation evenings, or where possible, by our top national players at England Squash events, such as the British Open.

The senior awards have been so successful that in December 2006 England Squash launched its “Young Volunteer of the Month” awards scheme.  The process and awards is similar to the senior awards, except that they can also be presented in schools.  Young volunteer winners also receive subsidised support for coach education.

In November 1999 Matthew took up the game of squash as a complete beginner.  Matthew has gone on to represent Lancashire as a junior and currently plays in Division 2 of the North West Counties Squash League, the largest adult squash league in the United Kingdom.  He attends regularly monthly Lancashire Junior A Squad sessions at the National Squash Centre in Manchester.

This year Matthew is looking to take his England Squash Level 1 Coaching course and England Squash are funding him as a Young Leader to take his Mini Squash Leaders Course.

Suzanne Glavin Chief Executive of Sports Volunteering North west had this to say “Reward and recognition of our volunteers in sport is a key ingredient to successful volunteer management and as such we are supportive of the great efforts England Squash and other National Governing Bodies of Sport of making in recognizing and celebrating the success and contributions of their volunteers. John Gibson and I have recently met to discuss how SVNW can support England squash in recruiting the volunteer workforce required to deliver the World squash Championships in 2008”.
