Karen Tonge - MBE
Congratulations to Karen Tonge, Chair of SVNW, recently made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in the New Years Honours List.
Receiving the same award as Lewis Hamilton and young swimmer Eleanor Simmonds, Karen has been honoured for her voluntary services to table tennis.
It is an award that is richly deserved but not for her skills in the international table tennis arenas of the world, rather for her immense voluntary contribution to sport. Certainly that is undoubtedly true and is a deserved reward for her, a person who gives her time freely and seeks no financial gain.
“It came as a complete surprise”, said a delighted Karen Tonge. “It is good that volunteers in sport are recognised for their contribution to society. Sport changed my life and I want to help it change other peoples. Sport brings people together providing benefit for of all ages; sports volunteers are at the heart of the community which is why I am so committed to svnw. It is indeed an honour to be the person selected to receive MBE when there are at least 6 million sports volunteers in
In addition to the time she dedicates to SVNW, Karen is a table tennis administrator as NW Chairman Table Tennis, senior coach (Level 4), international referee and international blue badge umpire and at grassroots chairman of Halton Table Tennis Club.
