Angela Minervini
Angela started out volunteering at Trinity and St Aidan’s gym clubs, but now she runs them, ensuring enough coaches are present on the day and helping them prepare for competitions. Angela has also been delivering exercise to music class with a funky urban twist to girls in local secondary schools as part of a programme by the School Sport Partnership to get girls not interested in sport participating in something tailored to them.
Angela is a highly committed sports volunteer, who has came through the system from Step into Sport national volunteering programme. Angela's volunteering started within the curriculum doing Sport Education and then CSLA. There was then a natural progression to enrol onto the Step into Sport programme to further her personal development.
As a sports volunteer in school, Angela ran the Top Link festival, has helped coach the school gymnastics team both at St Aidan's and has taught Urban Funk dancing in various secondary schools in the Carlisle SSP.
Angela has also been involved in various sports and health weeks over the past 2 years.
Last year Angela was selected to go the National Step into Sport conference at Loughborough, which changed her overnight from what once was a shy and non confident teenager turned into a sports volunteer of a high professional standard due to the opportunity provided by the Step into Sport programme.
Angela has undertaken various CPD opportunities throughout the last 2 years, including the Urban Funk Dancing qualification, Weight Management and Childhood Obesity accredited course, Trampolining and Exercise to Music to name but a few. At present, Angela volunteers at St Aidan's and Trinity gymnastics clubs after school and is getting them both ready for the County competition, working with both boys and girls.
Angela also helps out at Carlisle Gymnastics club and is a precious link from school to club gymnastics. Angela also volunteers within the secondary schools within the Carlisle & North Cumbria SSP doing aerobics, urban funk and general curriculum PE.
Angela is benefiting the community by increasing the capacity local gymnastic clubs can take. She has demonstrated a range of personal qualities by being a fantastic role model, for the children at the gym club and for the teenage girls at her urban funk dance classes. Angela is constantly developing herself personally by attending a wide range of training courses and then passing the benefit of her knowledge and skills on.
She has demonstrated a strong commitment to diversity through the delivery of the urban funk –engaging a traditionally hard to reach group, Angela then also contributed to their personal development by improving their health and wellbeing. This is a practical demonstration of social integration, it also demonstrated Angela widening participation both in the Urban Funk Dance and the gymnastics clubs. Angela is very conscientious about contributing to good health and fitness, in particular after attending the Weight Management and Childhood Obesity course.
