Heather Ranson
Heather has volunteered at after school clubs for over 2hours weekly, assisting with Ball Skills for years 5 and 6. She has also helped out at Disability Awareness Days in the local area – responsible for athletics coaching for people with Mild and Severe learning Difficulties between the ages of 10 and 18 years. She has also volunteered at a team Building event at the local sixth form college helping new recruits to settle into the college and make new friends whilst engaging in sports activities. In addition, she has volunteered at an event to support the new JSLA students to complete part of their course which incorporated athletics activities.
She was responsible for the integration of one young boy at a primary school with little interest in sport, few friends and extremely withdrawn to become involved in after school activities. He then went on to get a place in the team at his local rugby club. She has supported disability awareness days to promote inclusion across the sports and taken a lead in ensuring all participants integrate with each other regardless of ability/disability and helping young people with a disability to become involved in sport and try a sport/activity for the first time.
She has also been heavily involved in athletics activities for children with SLD and MLD. She has taken numerous courses to develop her own skills and be able to develop others by passing on her knowledge. She has helped young people to settle into the sixth form by assisting at a team building event, arranging and running sports sessions.
This has proven to be extremely popular and has helped the new students to integrate with each other whilst contributing to their own personal health and fitness. Her commitment to volunteering has seen an increase in club membership of 25%. As a result she has set up an additional age group at the club due to older children showing an interest in the club and its activities.
