Shaun Codd

Shaun is a volunteer on the Manchester Leisure Positive Futures Volunteering Programme.

Over a year ago Shaun on starting with the project initially lacked confidence when first involved in delivering community sports sessions/schemes and would sit back in the shadows of the more experienced and qualified coaches.

Being mentored by the other coaches he was given more and more responsibility each week, from setting out equipment, marking out pitches to officiating, building up his confidence whilst he was gaining valuable experience and increasing his knowledge.

The mentoring process has resulted in Shaun taking the lead in the delivery of sessions, whilst displaying the necessary skills and qualities to build positive and meaningful relationships with young people attending the schemes, an amazing feat considering he is working with some of the most challenging and vulnerable young people in the City.

Shaun is from the same community as these young people and can empathise with them, whilst acting as a positive role model giving other young people something to aspire too. Shaun is currently working with young people aged 16-19 (NEETS) Not in Education, Employment or Training, that has resulted in six of them enrolling on an Active Lifestyle course with City College.

The volunteering work he undertakes has real positive impacts for the local community, issues such as anti social behaviour, youth nuisance, and helping to build community cohesion and respect.
