Young Volunteers
Aim
The NW Young Volunteer programme was established to coordinate and combine the Millennium Volunteer and Step into Sport volunteer programmes running in the North West in order to use sport as the vehicle to develop leadership skills in young people from the age of 16 to 24. The programme provides clearly signposted, well supported pathways into volunteering and potential employment in sport for young people across the region. The Millennium Volunteer Programme has come to a close, but Step into Sport is still running and you can also find out about Youth Volunteering programmes at www.vinspired.com
Between April 2006 and March 2007:
- 799 young volunteers have been recruited and placed in community volunteering.
- 425 young volunteers have completed 100 hours of community volunteering.
- 267young volunteers have completed 200 hours of community volunteering.
- 989 qualifications including sport specific coaching badges, Emergency First Aid, Good Practice and Child Protection have been achieved by the young volunteers on the programme.
- 254 Volunteer co-ordinators and mentors have been recruited to the programme to support the young volunteers.
- Sports Volunteering NW volunteers have contributed 87,958 hours to clubs and communities across the region.
- According to the Office of National Statistics Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2004, this translates to a notional wage bill of £719,496.
